Biography
Dr. Mbulaiteye received his M.D. from Makerere University, Kampala, in 1990, an MPhil in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from Cambridge University in 1994 and a Masters in Internal Medicine from Makerere University in 1996. He worked as a Senior Registrar at the Uganda Cancer Institute and a Project Medical Officer in the Medical Research Council Programme for AIDS in Uganda before joining NCI as a Research Fellow in 2000. He became a tenure-track investigator in 2005. He is a member of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences, the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC), Darwin College Society, and Cambridge Common Wealth Trust. Currently, he is serves on the DCEG Technical Evaluation of Questionnaires and Technical Evaluation of Protocols committees, and is an adjunct lecturer at George Washington University School of Public Health.
Research Interests
- Human γ-herpesviruses, human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and their associated cancers--Kaposi sarcoma, primary effusion lymphoma and Burkitt lymphoma, respectively
- Immunosuppression or immune alteration and their relationship to cancer etiology and/or pathogenesis in diverse populations
- Co-factors for uniquely distributed cancers, such as gastric cancer and oral cancers, which have distinct but unexplained distributions in different populations
