2008 TENNESSEE SCIENCE BOWL WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Oak Ridge High (Team One) Defeats Farragut High

 (Team One) for First Place

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. Oak Ridge High School took home the top honor at Saturday’s annual U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Tennessee Science Bowl.

Fifty four teams from 33 high schools across Tennessee participated in the all-day academic competition, which featured questions focused on the scientific disciplines of astronomy, chemistry, biology, earth and general science, mathematics, and physics.

As the winning team, Oak Ridge High School (Team One) received a $1,000 cash prize for their school, a first-place trophy and an all-expense-paid trip to compete against more than 60 other teams from across the nation in the U. S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl to be held May 1-6, in Washington, D.C.

“The knowledge these students possess is astonishing,” said Gerald Boyd, Manager of the DOE Oak Ridge Office.  “Although there’s only one top spot in this competition, it’s one of those situations where we wish there could be more than one first-place winner.”  He continued, “We appreciate all the other schools that took time out of their weekend to be a part of this DOE competition, and our hats off to our hometown Oak Ridge High School for taking home top honors.”

The winning Oak Ridge High School (Team One) was lead by Coach Eddie Anderson, with team members Rowan Crakovmakos, Woody Austin, Ryan Liu, Katherine Xue, and Alborz Bejnood.

Trophies and cash prizes were also awarded to the runners up: second place team Farragut High School (Team One) received $750; third place team, Farragut High School (Team Two) received $500; and fourth place team, Houston High School from Germantown, Tennessee, received $250.  The winner of the civility award for outstanding sportsmanship, West Knox Home School Academic Team, Knoxville, received $100.

The Tennessee Science Bowl took place on the Hardin Valley Campus of Pellissippi State Technical Community College in Knoxville.  The major program sponsors included the U.S. Department of Energy Oak Ridge Office, Oak Ridge Associated Universities, the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, Pellissippi State Technical Community College, and the Knoxville News Sentinel.

The day’s events also included a paper airplane contest where the winner, Chris Byers of Roane County High School, took home a Piper Super Cub remote-controlled airplane.
