Take the Energy Star Change a Light Pledge

Change just one light and see how a small step can make a big difference

Thank you for your interest in the Department of Energy’s Change A Light Campaign.  Energy is on everyone’s mind these days. Here’s a simple step we can each take to preserve energy resources, save money and help the environment. Join me in changing at least one light bulb at home to an Energy Star bulb. Every light bulb you change to an Energy Star qualified bulb uses 1/3 of the energy of a standard incandescent light, lasts up to 10 times longer, and saves an average of $30 or more in energy costs over its lifetime.

With over 120,000 employees and contractors, the Department of Energy can make a big contribution to this campaign. If each member of the DOE family took the pledge and changed just one light bulb to an Energy Star-qualified light bulb. . .

  • We would be responsible for saving up to 6.5 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year – enough energy to light three thousand sixty five homes for a year.
  • The amount of carbon dioxide emissions reduced would be like removing 886 cars from U.S. parking lots and roads.
  • Our emissions savings would have the same effect as if we were to plant 1260 acres of trees.

I know that with your help, the campaign will be a huge success. I am excited about the Change A Light Campaign and I thank you for your pledge.

Sincerely,

Samuel W. Bodman
Secretary of Energy
