1. National Swimming Center Conceptual Designs Short-listed

BOCOG and the Beijing State–owned Assets Management (BSAM) announced that models of the three conceptual designs for the National Swimming Center, selected by an evaluation committee, were exhibited for public opinion on July 3-4 and 6, 2003. A decision on the final design will be made by August 15, 2003.

The three finalists from among ten total submissions received awards for excellence and are: the consortium between China Construction Engineering Corporation and Australia PTW Architecture Firm, the Shanghai Modern Architecture Design Ltd., and Rafael Vinoly Architects PC of the United States.

The National Swimming Center will be located in the Olympic Green, covering a floor space of 70,000 square meters, with a capacity to hold 6,000 permanent and 11,000 temporary seats (17,000 seats total). The National Swimming Center will host the Olympic 2008 swimming, diving, water polo and synchronized swimming events. It will be converted into a large-scale multi-functional facility to provide the public recreation, sports and fitness services after the Games. Construction of the facility is set to begin in December 2003, and will be completed by the end of 2006. Total investment is estimated at USD 100 million.

2. BOCOG to Unveil 2008 Olympic Emblem Early August

The presentation of the official emblem for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will be held on August 3, 2003.

The IOC approved the emblem for the 2008 Games in March 2003. The unveiling of the emblem, which was originally scheduled for May 25, was postponed due to the outbreak of SARS. Another postponed event, the Olympic Culture Festival, previously scheduled for late June in the Chinese capital, has been rescheduled for September of this year.

The Olympic Marketing Plan Agreement will also be officially launched in September 2003.

3. Upcoming Stadia China 2004 Infrastructure Supplies & Services Event

The Chinese organizers of the U.S. Commercial Service-supported Stadia & Arena Infrasport 2003 event, held in January 2003 have recently announced plans to organize another Stadia event to highlight supplies and services connected with sports and leisure facilities during the Olympic Games 2008.

WIth offiicial support from Beijing, and co-organized by the China State General Administration of Sport - Sport Facilities Construction and Standards Authority, and U.S. firm Kallman Associates Inc., the event promises to offer international firms an opportunity to showcase technology and services to key decision-makers on infrastructure supplies and services for Beijing and China's newest sports facilities.

Kallman Associates is organizing U.S. firms to join the U.S. Pavillion at this event. The U.S. Commercial Service in Beijing plans to provide counseling and support to U.S. companies who attend.
