1. Budget Estimates Outlined for Beijing Olympic Venue Construction

Beijing 2008 Olympic Games will utilize 37 sports venues. 32 of them are located in Beijing and 5 in other surrounding cities - including Tianjin, Shanghai, Shenyang, Qingdao, Qinhuangdao. Of the 32 venues in Beijing, 19 are new constructions and the others facilities will be renovated or extended. For venues outside Beijing, 3 will be new constructions and 2 will be renovated. The total investment in the venues is estimated to be $1.65 billion.

Keep in mind that the investment figures are only estimates, and Beijing Municipal Government and the State General Administration of Sports have already adjusted many of the investment ratios. Many of projects will be funded both by the Beijing Municipal Government and the State General Administration of Sports. Look for project updates on our website.

2. State General Administration of Sports Announces Venue Design Competition – By Invitation Only

On March 20, 2003, the Sports Facilities Construction and Standard Authority Office of the State General Administration of Sports of the People’s Republic of China held a press conference to announce the “International Architectural Design Competitions for both the Beijing Shooting Range and the Laoshan Cycling Velodrome for the 29th Olympic Games.

Consistent with the Beijing Olympics Action Plan, the designs must reflect the 3 main principles of a “Green, High-tech and People’s” Olympics. Winning design firms will be awarded $60,000 for the Shooting range, and $80,000 for the Laoshan Cycling Velodrome.

The following participants have been pre-selected, based on recommendations by the relevant National and International Sports Associations.

3. American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham-China) Launches Olympic Forum

The American Chamber of Commerce – People’s Republic of China is pleased to announce the launch of the AmCham-China Olympic forum. 4. Name List of Judges for the International Competition of the Architectural Concept Design for National Stadium Released

Ganzhi Zhou (China): Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and Chinese Academy of Sciences. Former deputy secretary of China Ministry of Construction.

Zhaoye Guan (China): Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Renowned master architect, Senior Professor.

Dapeng Lou (China): Sports Director of Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad.

Jikui Mei (China): Senior Professor. He was engaged in the research of long-span space structure such as Sports facilities for many years and produced many outstanding designs of gymnasiums such like Asian Sports Games GYM.

Shizhao Shen (China): Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Senior Professor, deputy director of The Architectural Society of China (ASC), commissioner of Supervision Committee of National Natural Science Foundation of China and expert of long-span space structure.

Yongquan Ping (China): Director of Engineering Department of Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad.

Yan Huang (Female, China): Deputy Director of Beijing Municipal Planning Commission, Planner.

Dominique Perrault (France): Famous French architect. He won the international competition for the construction of the French National Library in 1989, and in 1992, the international competition for the Olympic Velodrome and swimming Pool in Berlin. He has been awarded various prizes, notably the Great National Prize of Architecture in 1996 and the Mies van der Rohe Prize in 1997. From November 1998 to February 2001 he was President of the French Institute of Archhitects.

Rem Koolhaas (Netherlands): Famous Holland architect. He had been awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2000. Since 1995 he is professor of Harvard University. He conducts design research into a focused investigation of current urban-architectural conditions in various parts of the world. The work of Rem Koolhaas and the OMA has won several international awards, and was the subject of a retrospective exhibition held at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1995: Rem Koolhaas and the Place of Public Architecture.

Jean Nouvel (France): Famous French Architect and Planner. For his work he has won, among others, the Gold Medal of the French Academy of Architecture, the Royal Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects. Among Mr. Nouvel's principal completed buildings are the Arab World Institute in Paris, the Lyon Opera House.

Kishou Kurokawa (Japan): Famous Japanese Architect. He got his Doctor degree from School of Architecture in Tokyo University, 1964. His major works include Toyota Stadium, Oita Stadium and Illinois Center Sporting Club.

Josep Lluis Mateo (Spain) - Famous Spanish Architect. He graduated in architecture in 1974 at the ETSAB, doctorate from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in 1994. Since 2002 he is permanent Professor at the Architecture Department at the Federal Swiss Polytechnic in Zurich.

Benedetta Tagliabue (Female, Spain): Famous Spanish Architect. She graduated in Venice in 1989. Her major works include House Garau-Agusti, Bellaterra, the National Center for Rhythmic Gymnastics in Alicante and Park in Mollet del Valles in Barcelona in Spain.

5. Beijing Development Planning Commission (BDPC) “Ownership Tenders” Update

As the BDPC “Ownership Tenders” for the seven major venues of the Beijing 2008 Olympics is expected to go into full tender by the end of April, we have received many requests from US companies for the names of the short-listed consortiums. BDPC has stated that those lists will not be made public. No further information is available at this time. Any changes will be sent via the “Hot Sheet.”
