Knowledge on prevention of infection among family members of AIDS and HIV clients.

Number of AIDS and HIV clients in Thailand increase obviously. These clients are very prone to infection. Their family members have to take care and support them for a long period. Family members may get HIV and other pathogenic organisms from the clients if they do not know how to protect themselves. This study aim to determine knowledge on prevention of infection among family members of AIDS and HIV clients. Samples were 98 family members who took care AIDS and HIV clients closely and came to take care the clients while they were admitted in medical wards at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital in the period of September-December 1996. Data were collected by interviewing family members about knowledge on prevention of infections. Data were analyxed by using descriptive statistic. The result of this study revealed that 77.6 percent of samples were female. Age of samples ranged from 14 to 76 years, mean age was 40.5 years. 30.6 and 24.5% of samples were in 30-39 and 40-49 year age group respectively and 8.2% were in 60 years and over age group. Sixty-three point three percent finished primary school level. Samples were parent and husbands or wives of the clients in the same proportion 28.6% and 23.5% brothers or sisters. Mean score of knowledge on prevention of infections was 76% of total score. Mean score of knowledge on prevention of disease, mode of transmission of disease and AIDS transmission were 87.5, 73.3 and 67.1 percent of total score of each part respectively. Sixty eight point four percent of samplea had moderate level of knowledge on prevention of infections, 17.3 and 14.3 percent had low and high level of knowledge respectively. The result suggested that health personnels who work in hospitala are the key persons to support and educate family members while they comt to take care the clients in the hospital so that they can take care the clients more safely and effectively at home.
