Volunteers prepare flags for The Healing Field
Approximately 60 volunteers spent the morning at the Anderson Readiness Center, Oregon Army National Guard preparing the flags to be displayed at the Salem Riverfront Park next week. The goal is to "Raise a Flag for those who have Fallen".
 
The public is invited to attend any or all of the events scheduled between Sept. 7 - 12. Volunteers are needed for several of the events as well.
WHEN : Saturday Sept.1 2006
 
Volunteers will be needed on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006 at 10 a.m. to assemble the 9/11 Field. Interested volunteers need to assemble by the Carousel. They will be 4,500 flags in the 9/11 Field
 
Friday, Sept. 8, 2006 at 10 a.m., members of the different service branches of the military will assemble the "Military Field" honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. This field will be near the Pavilion on the north end of the park. The "military Field will be set up during a dedication ceremony where the names of the fallen will be read as the flags are posted.
 
Sunday morning, the Patriot Guard Riders will assemble at the Fred Meyer North Salem Parking Lot for a procession along Front Street to the Healing Field in honor of all who were lost on 9/11 as well as the military members who have made the ultimate sacrifice supporting the Global War on Terror.
 
On Sunday, Sept. 10, 2006 at 2 p.m. there will be a ceremony at the Amphitheater at 2 p.m.
 
The final ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. at the Amphitheater on Monday, Sept. 11, 2006.
 
Volunteers will also be needed on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2006 beginning at 8 a.m. to tear down the Healing Fields.
 
The flags will be made available to the public at a nominal fee of $25 each. This will be include the Flag of Honor which list those who lost their lives on 9/11/2001, the Flag of Heroes is in honor of the police and fire department members who perished in the aftermath and the U.S. Flags honoring the soldiers lost in the Global War on Terror. Flags can be mailed for an additional cost of $5 or picked up on Sept. 12th at the tear down or later at designated locations. Monies generated by this event will be used to take care of soldiers and their families who are currently serving on active duty in Afghanistan and Iraq.
