Army Guard Soldier to Receive Purple Heart for Injuries received in Iraq
 
Salem, Ore. - A Purple Heart Award ceremony will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2004 at 1 p.m. at the Salem Armory Auditorium located at 2320 17th Street NE, Salem, Oregon (Corner of 17th and Sunnyview Streets).
 
Private 1st Class Ramon Garcia was a gunner on patrol in Baghdad, Iraq when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded. He sustained a fractured left jaw, shrapnel to his left eye and superficial wounds to his right thigh.
 
Garcia was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry, Oregon Army National Guard who mobilized with the 39th Brigade Combat Team of Arkansas and the 1st Cavalry Division from Ft. Hood, Texas.
 
Craig Campbill, Senior Policy Advisor for Governor Kulongoski, Brig. Gen. Raymond C. Byrne Jr, Acting Adjutant General and Brig. Gen. Douglas A. Pritt, Commander, 41st Brigade Combat Team will be on hand for this presentation.
