Army Guard launches Helicopter to Mt. Rainier

Salem, Ore. - At the request of the Parks Service on Mt. Rainier, the Oregon Army National Guard has launched one CH-47 Chinook Helicopter out of Pendleton, Ore. to assist in the rescue of some injured climbers on Mt. Rainier. The injured climbers are reported to be on Liberty Ridge on Mt. Rainier. The climbers are reported to be at the 12,000 feet elevation which requires the larger Chinook helicopter which operates more effectively at the higher elevations. A UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter out of Salem, Ore. is transporting flight medics to the scene where they will connect with the Chinook. The medics will board the Chinook and be available to treat and stabilize the injured climbers prior to the rescue. The Blackhawk will remain at the scene to provide transport to a medical facility if it becomes necessary.
