Be "In the Company of Heroes" on Saturday, June 1st

Portland, Ore.-Members of the media and the public are invited on Saturday, June 1, to be "In the Company of Heroes" as local firefighters, police officers, and military members join together for a special fun-filled event in honor and support of the Legion of Valor (LOV). The LOV--which is scheduled to host their 112th national convention in Portland this August--is a unique military veteran's organization whose membership is exclusive to combat heroes who have earned the nation's highest medals for valor: the Medal of Honor and/or the Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross, or Air Force Cross.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the future location for Portland Fire Bureau's Jeff Morris Fire and Life Safety Learning Center on 5 S.E. Madison St., at the east end of the Hawthorne Bridge on the esplanade. According to Mr. Larry Deibert, national commander for the LOV and resident of Corbett, Ore., the gathering will give people a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet and visit with some of our nation's greatest heroes while enjoying food and fun activities.

Water demonstrations on the Willamette River will be performed by firefighters aboard Portland Fire Bureau's David Campbell Fire Boat Fire trucks, police cars, and U.S. Army Humvees will be on display and open to the public.

For lunch, hamburgers and hotdogs barbequed by area firefighters and beverages will be sold. Enjoy tasty food and live music along the beautiful waterfront in the company of heroes.

Prizes, including three Hawaiian vacation packages, a Columbia Sportswear package, and a host of other great items, will be available through raffle ticket purchases. T-shirts, patches and other items will be sold. Proceeds will benefit the Legion of Valor.
