"Operation Fang" to prepare soldiers for mobilization

White City, OR - In preparation for their deployment in support of MFO Sinai, members of the 1st Battalion, 186th Infantry headquartered in Ashland will travel to the Veterans Administration Domicillary near Medford, Ore. this weekend.

In a joint operation by the Veterans Administration, the Oregon Army National Guard dentists and the 7th Infantry Dentist, Operation Fang will improve the dental fitness of these deploying soldiers. This dental treatment will correct conditions that could interfere with training, deployment and combat effectiveness. These conditions could have been present for years with causing problems. However, combat conditions combined with stress, fatigue and limited diet will accelerate disease processes and soldiers will develop dental emergencies.

Operation Fang will ensure the soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 186th Infantry are medically prepared to deploy and operation in a hostile, austere environment with limited support. Under these conditions, a unit cannot afford to lost soldiers due to disease and non-battle injuries.

One lesson learned from Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm was the importance of dental readiness.
