Documentary following nine Oregon Army Guard soldiers in Iraq to have free showing throughout Oregon
"This is War", is an 84-minute documentary following nine soldiers serving in Iraq and will be featured at a free showing open to the public at locations throughout Oregon. Below is a listing of the dates, times and locations of the showings that are currently scheduled. Family, friends, veterans and all citizens of Oregon are encouraged to attend and show their support of the soldiers from Oregon who have proven themselves to be a reliable, ready and relevant part of the total force of our country and our state.
The soldiers in this film are from the following towns in Oregon: Albany, Portland, Keizer and Hermiston. However, these soldiers served with the 2nd Battalion, 162 Infantry which had volunteers from the entire state or Oregon during their 2003-2004 deployment to Iraq.
After the showing of the video, several of the soldiers will be on hand to take the stage and answer any questions from the public concerning their role in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Several of these soldiers now hold positions with the Oregon National Guard to help returning soldiers through the process of reintegrating back into the role of citizen-soldier.
What makes this movie unique is the footage. Other than the talking head interviews, all of the footage (majority about 80% of the film) was shot by the soldiers themselves using digital cameras brought they brought from home.
The soldier's videotape, which was never intended for more than a friends and family audience, reveals them in a compromising light. They laugh, cry, complain and battle together. Through it all they reveal the vulnerable, but very real situation they're in. At one point or another throughout the movie, they all confess they realize they're here one moment, but could be gone the next.
When violence is depicted, it is startling and real. The soldiers, at times funny, sometimes bitter, sometimes very innocent share their story of combat in Iraq.
Gary Mortensen and Scot Laney of Lucky Forward Films have agreed to donate the any profits from the sale of this film to help soldiers and their families in Oregon.
