Photo of Sgt Tane Baum, ORNG Soldier killed in Afghanistan crash
U. S. military forces confirmed all five personnel aboard a CH-47 transport helicopter were killed when it crashed southwest of Deh Chopan on Sept. 25. Among the killed were two Oregon National Guard Soldiers:
- Warrant Officer 1 Adrian Stump, 22, of Pendleton. He is survived by his parents Jerry and Anne Stump of Pendleton;
- Sergeant Tane Baum, 30, of Pendleton. He is survived by his wife, Tina, and two children ages six and three all from Pendleton, as well as his father Danny Baum of Pendleton, and his mother Brenda Davis of Athena, Ore.
Warrant Officer Stump and Sgt. Baum are the first ORNG Soldiers to die in Afghanistan.
Officials in Afghanistan reported the aircraft was returning from a mission in support of an ongoing operation at the time of the crash. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the service members lost today," said Maj. Gen. Jason Kamiya, head of Combined Joint Task Force 76, in a press release from Afghanistan on Sunday. "I would like them to know that our service members gave their lives in a noble cause -- to defend freedom and to assist the government of Afghanistan in providing for a safe and prosperous future for the Afghan people."
The Soldiers of the Oregon National Guard were assigned to Detachment 1, Company D, 113th Aviation Battalion based out of Pendleton. Two soldiers from the Nevada Army National Guard and an active duty soldier were also killed.
The 113th Avn. is headquartered out of Stead, Nev. The Pendleton detachment mobilized in January for a one year deployment.
The families of Oregon's fallen have asked that all media respect their grief and privacy. They have requested all queries go through the Oregon National Guard Public Affairs office for at least the next 48 hours.
The ORNG Public Affairs office will provide more information as it becomes available.
