Maj. Gen. Rees to host press availability on Hurricane Katrina support operations

Major General Raymond F. Rees, The Adjutant General of the Oregon National Guard will be on site at the Jackson National Guard Armory at 12 p.m. today to respond to questions regarding the latest call up of Oregon National Guard soldiers to support Hurricane relief operations. The armory is located at 6255 NE Cornfoot Road, Portland, Ore. This is just west of the entrance to the Air National Guard Base.

The 41st Brigade Combat Team has committed to provide 1,500 soldiers to assist with stability and recovery missions in Louisiana.

We are preparing for troop movement which will include everything they will need to be totally self sufficient while deployed. Everything from food and water, to medical personnel, tents, cots, and more is being loaded and palletized and prepared for shipping with the troops.

Due to the backlog of air support for these missions and the ability of the state of Louisiana to receive and transport our troops and equipment to a forward operating base, we have not been able at this time to lock down the departure information.

General Rees will provide detailed information on our preparation, missions, restrictions and troop movement.

The 41st Brigade Combat Team will be deploying with soldiers from the Portland area all the way down to Klamath Falls in the south and The Dalles to the east.

Currently the main body of the 1186th Military Police are enroute to New Orleans where they will join up with the Task Force leader, Colonel Dave Greenwood and the advance party that departed yesterday. Immediate need in New Orleans is this type of unit to assist local law enforcement regain control of this city.

Interested media should coordinate with the Public Affairs Staff for setup of equipment and consideration of other needs.
