Oregon Army National Guard rescues climbers from Mt. Rainier
The Oregon Army National Guard rescued two injured climbers from Mt. Rainier this morning.
The climbers spent the night on the mountain, one suffering from a broken leg and the other a broken ankle. The rescue took place on Emmons Glacier at about 13,500 feet elevation.
The National Guard flew a UH-60 Blackhawk to the climbers to affect the rescue. The UH-60 is a state of the art helicopter specially configured for performing this type of mission.
The crew of four included:
- Pilot: Mr. Marco Frye (Chief Warrant Officer 5)
- Co-Pilot: Mr. Rich Chagnon (Chief Warrant Officer 4)
- Medic: Sgt. Pat Casha
- Crew Chief: Staff Sgt. Floyd Peterson
The helicopter launched from Salem, Ore. at approximately 5:30 a.m.
The Oregon National Guard comprises more than 6,000 soldiers and 2,000 airmen ready to serve the state in time of crises or emergency.
