Warrenton Unit Redesignated

The Oregon Army National Guard engineer company at Camp Rilea will receive a new mission at a ceremony Dec. 11 at 9 a.m. in the armory. The new mission is part of Army efforts to transform forces.

At the ceremony, C Company of the 1249th Engineer Battalion will become the 234th Engineer Company and remain under the 1249th En. Bn. The unit will change its mission from combat engineers to vertical construction.

The mission expands opportunities within the Oregon National Guard. Congress prohibits women from serving in front-line combat units, and by changing the mission from combat engineers to vertical construction women will now be able to join the unit.

Although the mission is changing, the engineers of the 234th Eng. Co. will still provide service for both state and federal missions.

The change of mission is one of many mission changes and unit re-designations occurring throughout the Oregon Army National Guard as it takes action under the U.S. Army Transformation initiative. Under Transformation, the Army is moving toward more modular forces to allow greater versatility in how units may be mobilized and employed.

Media are welcome to attend.
