LEWIS & CLARK BICENTENNIAL OPENING CEREMONY NOV. 11
The Oregon and Washington National Guard, along with the civilian organization, "Destination, The Pacific", are hosting an opening ceremony for Destination, The Pacific, a national Lewis and Clark signature event, at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, 2005 at Fort Stevens State Park near Warrenton, Ore.
The day-long event will be attended by members of the Oregon and Washington Air and Army National Guard, key military leaders nationally and from the Pacific Northwest region, Oregon Governor Theodore Kulongoski, Washington Governor Christine Gregoire, and tribal leaders from the Clatsop/ Nehalem Native American Tribes and many other tribes along the Lewis and Clark trail. Miss America 2002, Katie Harman will sing the National Anthem at the opening ceremony, accompanied by a combined Oregon-Washington military band.
Throughout the day, there will be military displays, a joint-force flyover, followed by a 21-gun salute on both the Washington and Oregon sides of the Columbia River, and Lewis & Clark's Corps of Discovery re-enactors, State Park Rangers, and military members, who will be on hand to answer any questions the public may have.
This is the only signature event taking place on the West Coast, which commemorates the culmination of Lewis and Clark's mission to find a route to the Pacific Ocean. The media is strongly urged to attend.
There will also be a reception held at Warrior Hall on the Rilea Training Site in Warrenton, Ore. at 3:00 p.m. on Nov. 11, where military leaders nationally and from around the Pacific Northwest will speak about the significance of the Lewis & Clark expedition. Honored guests include military veterans from WWII, the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, and Desert Storm. Attendees will have a chance to view displays of historic items and expedition replicas.
