Who We Are
The Community Corrections Division provides the court system, as well as the offender, with pre-trial and sentenced alternatives to secure confinement. The alternatives and services we offer strive to use evidence-based practices that promote pro-social behaviors and lifestyles. Our alternatives and services are available to persons charged with an offense who are incarcerated or who are facing incarceration. In order to be eligible to participate, a person must be ordered to the program by the court. The court may use the alternatives pretrial and after conviction. All persons ordered must be statutorily eligible for the program. TO TOP
Background
In 2002, the King County Executive, Chair of the King County Council, Presiding Judge of the Superior Court, Presiding Judge of the District Court, Prosecuting Attorney and the Sheriff's Office called for the implementation of a Community Corrections operation aimed at reducing criminal justice costs while maintaining public safety. The working group, headed by the Chief Deputy of the Prosecuting Attorney's Office, submitted a plan to the Criminal Justice Council. The plan called for Community Corrections to continue Work Education Release, Electronic Home Detention, consolidate offender work crews into the Community Work Program and establish a day reporting center. On December 16, 2002, the County Council passed an Ordinance creating the Community Corrections Division. TO TOP
Goals
- Improve quality of life for offenders and decrease their involvement in the Criminal Justice System
- Reduce the jail population
- Decrease the failure to appear rate
- Increase the offender's accountability
- Reduce the offender's rate of re-offense
- Address community safety
- Support successful change in offender behavior
- Expand the Divisions collaborative work with various partners to achieve its goals of increasing the use of alternatives
