Sickle Cell Research for Treatment and Cure

image of cover Sickle Cell Research for Treatment and Cure commemorates the 30th anniversary of the National Sickle Cell Anemia Control Act (P. L. 92-294). The law provided for establishment of voluntary sickle cell anemia screening and counseling programs; information and education programs for health professionals and the public; and research and research training in the diagnosis, treatment, and control of sickle cell anemia. Since then, the NHLBI has committed over $923 million for research programs to improve the lives of persons with sickle cell disease. The booklet describes a range of NHLBI activities, including the

  • Penicillin Prophylaxis in Sickle Cell Disease Studies.
  • Multicenter Study of Hydroxyurea in Sickle Cell Anemia.
  • Stroke Prevention Trials in Sickle Cell Anemia.

It also mentions examples of how basic science advances achieved prior to the 1970s enabled progress against sickle cell disease and describes ongoing studies to develop a cure.
