Research Interests

Infrared Astrophyisics -- studies of circumstellar material at very high angular resolution including material around mass losing late stars, young stellar objects, and hot stars, such as Wolf-Rayet stars and Luminous Blue Variables. Development of interferometric techniques to enable the studies mentioned above. I was a PI and co-PI on the first successful ground-based interferometer in the mid-infrared, the Berkeley Infrared Spatial Interferometer.

Exoplanet studies -- evolution of the habitable zone and life in the context of stellar evolution, evolution of debris disks, kuiper belt objects, and other material around stars as stars evolve off the main sequence during the sub-giant and red giant phases. Also measurement of spectra of known exoplanets using nulling interferometer techniques. Development of new techniques for detecting and characterizing earth-like planets, such as TPF-I and Darwin.

Current Projects

The Terrestrial Planet Finder Interferometer Mission. I am on the Science Working Group for this project.

The Darwin mission (ESA). I am on the Terrestrial Exoplanet Science Advisory Team (TE-SAT) on this one.

The Fourier-Kelvin Stellar Interferometer (FKSI) -- a Discovery class mission (I'm the PI) to characterize the atmospheres around known extra-solar planets, of which there are currently more than 150! This project can also do high resolution imaging studies of debris disks, and much othe unique science.

The Keck Interferometer. I'm the chair of the Science Working Group for this project. It is the hardware prototype for the nulling beam combiner technology for the TPF mission, among other things.

The Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). I have obtained access to this unique instrument and am involved in studies of circumstellar material around Wolf-Rayet stars, using the MIDI instrument on the VLTI.

This is just the top few things I'm involved in. There are other instruments and projects that I work on, particularly that are funded under the ROSES APRA and TPF Foundation Science programs.
