About the WHO Department of Food Safety, Zoonoses and Foodborne Diseases

WHO provides scientific advice for Member States, other organizations and the public related to the safety of food. Recognizing the global nature of many food safety problems, linking national food safety systems and building the capacity of such systems is also an important task for WHO. Today food safety is one of WHO's top ten priorities and the Organization calls for more systematic and aggressive steps to be taken to significantly reduce the risk of foodborne diseases. Dealing with this challenge is one of the major challenges for the 21st century in regard to food safety, implying a significant redirection of preventative efforts in many parts of the world.

Specific consideration should be given to the situation in developing countries, suggesting a leap forward using the experience of many developed countries. The food safety work of WHO unfolds at global as well as at regional and national level. In this site, you will find links to all six regional offices, each of which is equipped with food safety advisers representing an integral part of WHO's food safety focus.
