The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), with other possible participating NIH Institutes and Centers (IC's), intends to publish a Request for Applications (RFA) soliciting proposals for exploratory and hypothesis-testing research focusing on the use of brain imaging methods to determine brain regions and systems involved in negative reinforcement and avoidance learning in humans. Proposed studies do not necessarily have to be conducted in substance abusing populations, involve administration of drugs of abuse or treatment interventions, although such studies are encouraged. However, studies using only healthy human subjects to investigate normative brain mechanisms of negative reinforcement and avoidance learning must demonstrate the relevance of the proposed research to the understanding of addictive disorders. The RFA is expected to be published in late 2007 with an expected receipt date in March, 2008.
