Washington, D.C. -- At approximately 9:15
this morning, fugitive Samuel Israel III, 49, turned himself in to local
authorities in Southwick, Mass. “The U.S. Marshals are extremely pleased
with this surrender,” said U.S. Marshals Service Director John F. Clark.
“When he turned himself in, it was due to the massive pressure placed on
Israel by diligent investigators in the Marshals Service and by our partners
nationwide.” U.S. Marshal Joseph Guccione, Southern District of New York,
additionally praised the efforts of federal, state and local authorities and
members of the public who helped with the fugitive pursuit. Federal
investigators first learned of Israel’s intent to surrender when a member of
his family notified a Marshals Service contact earlier this morning.
Israel, who had arrived at the Southwick facility riding a Yamaha Elite
Scooter, has been turned over to Deputy U.S. Marshals and will face a
federal judge for his initial hearing in Springfield, Mass., at 3:00 p.m.
(EST) today. A decision on additional charges filed against Israel by the
U.S. Attorney’s office is pending.
