A fugitive wanted on major narcotics charges since 1998 has
been captured and returned to South Dakota. Daniel Davis, who is 53
years old, will appear in federal magistrate court in Rapid City for
an initial appearance today at 2:45pm.
Davis was being sought on both state and federal drug charges
stemming from 1998 federal indictment for Conspiracy to Distribute
Methamphetamine and Marijuana. Davis also faces drug charges by the
Lawrence County Sheriffs Office in Deadwood, SD that date back to
1994.
Following the 1998 Indictment, Davis fled the United States and hid
in Mexico. U.S. law enforcement officers in Mexico working with
Mexican officials closed in on Davis but before he was captured
Davis was able to flee once again and his whereabouts were unknown
for several years. Deputy Marshals continued to aggressively pursue
Davis and in late 2006 developed information indicating that Davis
was now possibly hiding in the Margarita Islands of Venezuela.
Information was forwarded to Immigration and Customs Enforcement
Agents (ICE) working in Venezuela. ICE agents were able to
positively identify Davis working in a hotel bar. Davis, who was
also illegally residing in Venezuela, was subsequently arrested and
ordered out of the country. Davis was then flown to Miami, FL where
he was met by Deputy United States Marshals who took him into
custody on the warrant from South Dakota.
“The capture of Mr. Davis an illustration of the dedication and
resolve of the Marshals Service in tracking down fugitives, even
those who flee the borders of the United States” said U.S. Marshal
Warren Anderson.
