2008 Diesel Engine-Efficiency and Emissions Research (DEER) Conference

2008 DEER Conference LogoThe 14th Diesel Engine-Efficiency and Emissions Research (DEER) Conference will be held on August 4-7, 2008, at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn in Dearborn, Michigan.

For more than a decade, the DEER Conference has been the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) primary mechanism for the public exchange of state-of-the-art advanced combustion engine research and development (R&D).

DEER brings together professionals in the engine community including engineers, scientists, academics, State and Regional regulators, environmental researchers and nonprofit organizations. At DEER 2008, DOE will showcase its cooperatively funded R&D with its partners, national laboratories, the nation's automotive transportation industry, universities, and other national and international organizations. DEER fosters the exchange of information and best practices through presentations and posters from new and on-going engine R&D and networking with industry colleagues.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS, PRESENTATIONS, AND POSTERS

Presentations and posters will be selected by an open competition. Abstract submissions were due by May 8, 2008. Authors will be notified by Monday, June 30, 2008 regarding acceptance. We solicited one-page abstracts from which a team of leading principal investigators in the field of engine research select up to sixty 20-minute oral only presentations to be given in the sessions below. We also select an additional 75 abstracts for poster presentations during the evening receptions. The following topics are solicited for abstracts, but not limited to:

  • Advanced Combustion Technologies
    • In-Cylinder Emissions Reductions and Efficiency Improvements
    • Advanced Fuel Injection Equipment and Controls
    • Modeling and Analysis
  • High-Efficiency Engine Technologies
    • Thermal Efficiency Improvement and Emissions Compliance
    • Development Challenges for Light-Duty Diesels
    • Turbo-Compounding Systems and Bottoming Cycles
    • Engine Down-Sizing Techniques
  • Fuels and High Performance Lubricants
    • Customized Fuels vs. "Smart Engines"
    • New Feedstocks for Diesel Fuels and Fuel Blends
    • Impact of Shale Oil and Oil Sands on Fuel Properties
    • Properties and Quality Control Issues for Biodiesel Blends
    • Lube Oil Additive's Effect on Aftertreatment Devices
    • Lubricant's Role in Improving Fuel Economy
  • Emission Control Technologies
    • NOx and PM Emission Control Technologies
    • Performance/Durability Issues
    • Urea Quality, Infrastructure, Distribution and Anti-Tampering Issues
    • Idle Reduction Technologies
    • Heavy-Duty Hybrid Powertrain Technologies
    • Mobile Source Air Toxics (MSATs)
  • Thermoelectrics for Vehicle Applications
    • Thermoelectric Generator Development
    • Scale-Up of High Efficiency Nanoscale Thermoelectric Materials
    • Thermoelectric HVAC Systems

Abstract submissions will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Pertinence of the reported work to the objective of high efficiency clean combustion engine technologies
  • Approach being pursued
  • Progress achieved on the project
  • Interest to the advanced combustion engine and emission control community
  • How the proposed technology advances the state of the art of combustion engine efficiency and/or compliance with emissions regulations
  • Timeliness (late-breaking news)

Authors will be notified of the disposition of their papers by Monday, June 30, 2008.

Commercialization

The use of company logos or trade names should be avoided on any audio-video aids used in conjunction with your DEER 2008 presentation.
