Projeto Purpurina: an intervention among transvestites and transsexuals in Rio de Janeiro.

Freire WV, Monteiro K, Longo P; International Conference on AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 1996 Jul 7-12; 11: 180 (abstract no. We.D.3727).

Nucleo de Orientacao em Saude Social (NOSS), Rio de Janeiro.

Issue: The inception of Projeto Purpurina has came from a strong demand from transvestite and transexual (TV & TS) sex workers in Rio de Janeiro due to the lack of interventions to this target group. Project: Project Purpurina has 2 main components: 1) Service providing (condom distribution, referrals to medical care and drug abuse treatment); 2)Couselling, aiming to find out factors to facilitate safe sex practices. It is a direct intervention at the streets of Rio, with a team of 3 people. Results: Due to the large and increasing number of TV & TS attended so far, we believe that the project has an important impact. Referrals made has shown an increasing search for medical care. Condom use with clients are higher since the beginning of the project. Lessons Learned: There are not many difficults to reach TV & TS and it is hard to understand why they have been so much ignored by either official or community organizations. They are very much interested in being reached and can be important partners in the fight against the epidemic.
