OBJECTIVE: To quantify differences between prospectively- and retrospectively-elicited sexual behaviors among HIV+ donors. METHODS: 1,198 prospective blood donors were interviewed. Thirty-eight HIV-positives were identified. At the same time, 50 HIV-positive donors not captured by the system, i.e. emergency or at mobile sites, were interviewed with the same questionnaire as a part of post-test counseling. RESULTS: The two groups were comparable in demographics, frequency of donation, and age at first sex. However, prospective donors significantly reported less frequent histories of many, but not all, STDs (in the past 3 and 12 months), extra-marital sex (13.2% vs 44%) and prostitute visit (7.9% vs 20%). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Since reporting of sexual histories among HIV-positives can be variably affected by the counseling, it is more advisable to develop donation deferral criteria based on prospective information.
