Issues: Slums in Rio de Janeiro are territories are marked by the absence of rights, social services, and the presence of organized crime - a scenario of increasing vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. Description: By the insertion of the prevention of STD/AIDS in the interior of the communities, the NGO (CEDAPS) organized a space for the distribution of informational material, condoms, and the organization of educational activities in the headquarters of 13 community associations - Community Center for Prevention. The work is developed in co-management with qualified community leaders such as Community Prevention Agents, creatively planned in accordance with the local culture: counseling, educational activities in schools an churches, educational street vendors (itinerant stalls); cultural festivals; series of live skits, theatrical plays, music (Rap, samba); among others. Different strategies are created and replicated by leaders belonging to the network of Communities in the fight against AIDS, registered in the publication: "Agents Ideas" - 2003. Lessons learned: The proximity of the communities with preventive action becomes essential for the mobilization of the territory with respect to the importance of self-care and the use of the condom. The approach should be direct, identifying the elements belonging to the local culture, discussing demands, motivations, and problems of the community, with emphasis on the content of the messages employed, guaranteeing local meaning to them, assumptions of the Common Health Education. Recommendations: Community Center constitute easily implanted strategies for promoting the participation and involvement of the community. They transform themselves into poles of information and services, improving the relation between the community and the public health services, increasing the participation and orienting the population in the search of services. One is dealing with a strategy adequate for the prevention and support for those who live with AIDS.
