Scattered fires near the Volga River in Russia were detected by MODIS on May 8, 2002. In the high-resolution imagery, it is apparent that the area is highly cultivate--the regular patterns in the vegetation--which suggests that these fires are agricultural and have been set to either clear new land for farming or grazing.
