Many fires are burning in this image of the Zeya River in the Amur Region of Russia. Red squares on the image denote areas where MODIS has detected enough heat to be considered a fire. It is possible to see both burn-scars and smoke from active fires in the higher-resolution images. The largest town in the vicinity is the Russian town of Svobodnyy, located in the lower left area of the image, near where the rivers join. This true-color MODIS image was compiled from data acquired April 3, 2002.
