WORLD RICE SITUATION AND OUTLOOK
Global rice trade for 2001 is projected at 23.4 million tons, nearly unchanged from the previous year. Worldwide consumption in 2000/01 will increase narrowly year to year by 2.5 million tons. However, global production is forecast to decline by 12.5 million tons (rough basis), largely due to a decrease in the estimate for Chinas 2000/01 production to the lowest in five years. This results in a 5.9 million ton decline in projected global ending stocks which is mostly accounted for by China and, therefore, is not likely to have a significant affect on international prices.
Huge supplies held by major exporters along with stagnant import demand have kept prices trading at recent record lows. The international market was quiet through the holiday season leaving nominal price quotes for Asian milled rice nearly unchanged. Over the past 6 weeks Thai 100B has ranged from $189 to $191 (FOB), while Viet 5% has ranged from $169 and $170 (FOB).
The export prices for U.S. long grain grade #2/4 percent has not changed month to month and remains at $287 (FAS) per ton. Export prices for U.S. medium grain #1/4 California rice have also remained constant, holding at $210 per ton.
