Congressional Mandates

Congress may require agencies to conduct studies, develop tools, or submit reports specifically to them and/or the public. GIPSA's Congressional mandates include the following:

A library of the types of contracts offered by packers to swine producers for the purchase of swine (including swine purchased for future delivery).

A broad study of marketing practices in the entire livestock and red meat industries from farmers to retailers, food service firms, and exporters.

A study of concentration in the red meat packing industry.

An annual report on the general economic state of the livestock industry, including changing business practices and activities that appear to raise concern under the Packers and Stockyards Act.
