Almost 3 million Americans have epilepsy. Most do not have complete seizure control, or experience seizure control at the
cost of debilitating side effects from medications. This year, another 200,000 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy and
an estimated 25,000 to 50,000 will die from seizures and related causes.
In March 2007, leading scientists, health care providers, and leaders of voluntary health organizations came together at the
National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD to discuss potential targets and technologies for new therapies, with the goal
of moving the field toward a cure.
