Going-to-the-Sun Road viewed from Oberlin Bend

September 24th to September 30th 2006

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Sandry Construction continues work at several locations, including accelerated construction on road damage between the east tunnel and Siyeh Bend that was caused by heavy rainfall in September 2005. This accelerated alpine work prevents motorized traffic between Siyeh Bend and Logan Pass, a distance of 2.5 miles, for the remainder of the fall. During this autumn work, weather permitting, visitors may continue to access Logan Pass from the west (31 miles) and may also travel the east side (15.5 miles) from St. Mary to Siyeh Bend. Logan Pass Visitor Center is open through Saturday, September 30. Road work is allowed on weekends. When the contractor elects to work weekends, signs will be placed on work zone gates to communicate access restrictions. Hiker and bicyclist access will be allowed through the closed work zone after hours and on weekends when the contractor is NOT working. No work is currently scheduled for this weekend. Weekend work will also be posted on the park’s website at: http://home.nps.gov/applications/glac/roadstatus/roadstatus.cfm

Glacier National Park is open.
The majority of the Going-to-the-Sun Road will remain open as long as weather and road conditions permit. Logan Pass was temporarily closed for several days recently due to snow and hazardous conditions, but is again open. Autumn colors are emerging at all elevations. Visitor services and facilities remain open in the park and in neighboring gateway communities.

Work Information:
Much of this season’s road work is expected to be completed soon. The guard wall east of Logan Pass was completed this week and road bed work is underway. Traffic lights are currently located at Oberlin Bend where work continues. Traffic delays may occur between 7:30 am to 6 pm; however, the cumulative daytime delay from this work zone will not exceed 30 minutes. There is also unrelated work near St. Mary Campground that may cause short delays and single-lane traffic.
