Construction, demolition & landclearing diversion/recycling and disposal options
Construction, demolition and landclearing (CDL) debris results from construction, remodeling, repair or demolition of buildings, roads or other structures. It includes (but is not limited to) wood, concrete, drywall, masonry, roofing, siding, structural metal, wire, insulation, asphalt, packaging materials related to construction or demolition and natural vegetation resulting from clearing land for development. Disposal at Solid Waste Division facilitiesResidents and businesses are encouraged to divert CDL debris toward recycling (processed into a new product) or beneficial use (burned as fuel in a boiler or used as alternate daily cover at a landfill). There are good diversion options for natural vegetation, clean wood, metals, concrete, asphalt and many other materials. Customers using dump bed vehicles may not dispose of CDL at SWD transfer stations. Small amounts of CDL (less than 10 percent by volume) that are part of a large load of garbage will be accepted. Materials may not be longer than eight feet. Bulky items, such as concrete blocks, must be no greater than 2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet in size and weigh less than 200 pounds. If pulling a trailer, total length from bumper to bumper may not exceed 30 feet except at the Bow Lake, Enumclaw, Shoreline and Vashon transfer stations, where a combined length of 45 feet can be accommodated. Diversion/recycling options for CDL materialsDiverting CDL materials from a landfill for recycling or beneficial use is a proven less expensive alternative to disposal. Tipping fees at single stream diversion facilities are usually less than at facilities accepting loads of mixed recyclable CDL materials and these tipping fees are always less than disposing of CDL materials as waste. The easiest, and most cost effective materials to recycle at single stream recycling facilities include:
For detailed information on CDL diversion and to find your nearest CDL facility, download a copy of SWD's Construction Recycling Directory (PDF, 1,007 K) or visit the What do I do with…? Web site. King County’s Construction Recycling Web site can provide you with lots of other useful information on diverting CDL materials. Diversion/recycling rates are available for local facilities that accept loads of mixed CDL material. For more information about CDL acceptance policies, contact a Customer Service Representative at 206-296-4466; or 1-800-833-6388 (TTY Relay). Disposal locationsCDL materials that cannot be diverted for recycling or beneficial use must be disposed at a permitted waste handling facility. The following facilities accept mixed CDL materials for both diversion (recycling/beneficial use) and disposal.
