HBO Special on Addiction
The Governor’s Council on Addictions and Drug Abuse Programs and the Department of Human Services, Addictions and Mental Health Division (AMH), Oregon Recovery Association Project (RAP), Join Together, Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA), and Faces and Voices of Recovery, and are requesting your assistance in educating communities and taking action on addiction and recovery.
Home Box Office (HBO) has produced a documentary about addictions that will be aired on March 15th with subsequent shows on addiction topics airing through March 30, 2007 (through April 16, 2007 for HBO On Demand). DVD sets of the series will also be made available at a future date. HBO will launch the Addictions Project, a groundbreaking multi-media campaign to help Americans understand addiction as a treatable brain disease, spotlight new treatment advancements, and provide hope for long-term recovery.
In order to make this project a success in your community, we need your help. We would like coalitions, counties, tribes and communities to host town hall meetings during this time period to screen and discuss issues that arise during the series. This is a great opportunity to coordinate with local substance abuse Prevention coordinators, commissions on children and families, community mental health program directors, local addictions treatment providers, and people in recovery. The 14-part series will air during a free HBO preview weekend from March 15th through March 18th. The centerpiece documentary ADDICTION broadcasts March 15th at 6:00 pm PST. Please access www.AddictionAction.org for further information and useful tools to assist you in taking part in this exciting campaign.
You may also want to hold a “house party” to watch the documentary with friends, neighbors, or members from faith organizations in your community. This venue, along with the “town hall” format, provides another tool to facilitate dialogue and understanding of addictions and recovery after watching the documentary or featured series. The above web site includes helpful tools and suggestions for those who want to hold house parties or town hall meetings.
Portland is one of the cities selected by HBO for a premier of the documentary. Attached to this message, please find an invitation to the premier scheduled for March 14, 2007, beginning at 6:00 PM at the Oregon Convention Center, Oregon Ballroom. Please note the toll free number to call to make reservations. Seating will be limited.
If you have any questions about this campaign, please contact Monica McMyne, Recovery Association Project, at 503-493-9211, or Claudia Wilcox, Addictions and Mental Health Division, at 503-945-5765.
