WORLD RICE SITUATION AND OUTLOOK
Global rice trade for 2001 is
projected at 24.4 million tons, up more than two million tons
from the previous year. World production is forecast to decline
by just over one percent in 2000/01 to 591.8 million tons. Lower
global production and record consumption will result in a
drawdown in global stocks.
Nominal price quotes for milled rice have declined over the past twelve months. Prices for Thailand’s 100 percent grade B are 25 percent below a year earlier. Similarly, prices for Vietnam’s 5 percent broken and Pakistan’s 15/20 percent are also lower. Prices are currently reported below $190 per ton for both of these grades. Export prices for U.S. grade 2, 4 percent broken long grain have risen slightly over the past few weeks , primarily due to tight supplies of high quality rice. However, prices are still more than 20 percent below levels reported a year ago.
