Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

Outreach

SNAP Logo

As of Oct. 1, 2008, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the new name for the federal Food Stamp Program. The new name reflects the changes we’ve made to meet the needs of our clients, including a focus on nutrition and an increase in benefit amounts.  SNAP is the federal name for the program. State programs may have different names.

SNAP helps low-income people buy the food,  such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains, they need for good health. Through its outreach efforts, FNS works with State and local agencies, advocates, employers, community and faith-based organizations, and others to reach out to eligible low-income people who are not currently participating in SNAP and share information about the nutrition benefits of SNAP to help them make an information participation decision.
