The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) encourages applications for basic, clinical, and translational research on pain. This announcement is made together with 11 other components of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and is supported by 3 funding mechanisms: R01, R03, and R21.

Pain is a critical national health problem. Chronic pain affects more than 50 million Americans per year. Pain often results in disability and has a profound effect on quality of life. New advances are needed in every area of pain research, from the micro perspective of molecular sciences to the macro perspective of behavioral and social sciences. Although great strides have been made in some areas-such as the identification of neural pathways of pain-the experience of pain and the challenge of treatment have remained unsolved.
