Protecting Human Subjects - Human Subjects Policy Implementation
The Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Science oversees DOE sites that are involved in human subjects research and the protection of those human subjects. The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) assists this DOE office by:
- Developing manuals, brochures, and resource books to provide understanding of the guidance identified in DOE Orders and regulations referencing human subjects protection research
- Managing and facilitating workshops, workgroup conference calls, and electronic discussion lists
- Managing site reviews
- Developing and maintaining Web sites
- Managing databases
ORISE also coordinated the development and publication of the “Human Subjects Protection Resource Book.” A joint project of DOE, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, it provides best practices for Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), investigators, and research organizations.
This resource also offers working members of nine laboratory IRBs a reference tool to respond to updated guidance and issues they might have in dealing with human subjects research. Hard copies and CD versions are available to human subject professionals involved in research outside the DOE system.
