Radiation Exposure Data Collection
and Dose Reconstruction - NRC Radiation Exposure Information Recording System (REIRS)
The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) provides support for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) Radiation Exposure Information and Reporting System. REIRS is a database containing all occupational radiation exposure records that have been submitted to the NRC under 10 CFR Part 20.
ORISE:
- Manages, collects, and analyzes REIRS project radiation exposure information collected from NRC licensees
- Provides database management, Web site support, and software development
- Produces the annual report on occupational radiation exposure
The REIRS Web site maintained by ORISE provides:
- Information on radiation exposure data such as regulations and guidance
- A complete list of annual reports
- How to report data
- How to request information from NRC
- Available software
- Links to related sites
The two main software packages developed for the NRC licensees are available for download on the site. ORISE also provides maintenance and support for these applications.
- REMIT is a software package that licensees use to maintain and report exposure records to the NRC.
- REIRView is a software package that licensees use to validate their data submittals prior to submission to the NRC.
The Web site also provides a secure means to request individual radiation exposure records and receive them via e-mail.
The REIRS system began in 1969 under the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) when licensees were required to report radiation exposure records for individuals that terminated employment, as well as an annual report of the distribution of radiation exposure among the exposed workers during the year. In 1994, the NRC began requiring annual radiation exposure records to be reported for every monitored worker. At that time, the NRC also requested that reactor licensees submit exposure records for any individuals that had not yet been reported to the NRC. The data in the REIRS database is covered under the Privacy Act of 1974 and is listed as System of Records #27 for NRC.
