Waste Management Facility

A wide range of wastes are generated during the normal course of business at BNL. These waste streams are common to many businesses and industries, such as aerosol cans, batteries, paints and oils.  However, due to BNL's unique scientific and project activities, waste streams subject to additional regulation and special handling, such as radioactive waste, reactive chemicals, and solvents are also generated. The Waste Management Program is responsible for the pick-up, transportation, storage, and off-site disposal of site-generated wastes. Wastes are managed at a state-of-the-art facility consisting of storage buildings designed especially for the management of hazardous/industrial wastes, radioactive wastes, and mixed wastes.

The Waste Management Facility is comprised of three waste staging areas:

  • RCRA Building - for hazardous wastes regulated by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA);
  • Mixed Waste Building - for wastes that are both hazardous and radioactive;
  • Reclamation Building - for radioactive waste.

The RCRA and Mixed Waste Buildings are managed in accordance with a permit issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and were designed and constructed in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal requirements. These buildings are utilized for short term storage of wastes prior to being packaged or consolidated for off-site shipment to permitted treatment and disposal facilities.
