Project Highlight: Research-Evaluation-Guidance
National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)
Research Activities and Summaries
Client: National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)
ORISE helps the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) improve the health and safety of U.S. workers by conducting formative research activities and developing annual research summaries.
Examples include:
- Formative research for NIOSH using focus groups and in-depth interviews to explore the perceptions, opinions, beliefs, and attitudes of workers in the construction and agricultural industries regarding the preferred media for noise-induced hearing loss information. NIOSH utilized these results to develop hearing loss prevention resources
- Focus groups to study the role of small business owners in providing occupational safety and health information to employees. NIOSH used the results of this study to develop new communication formats specifically geared to meet the needs of small business
- Telephone surveys relative to occupational health needs and communication methods, such as surveying:
- firefighters to determine the most effective communication format to convey emergency information
- industrial hygienists on their use of NIOSH environmental sampling methodology
- agricultural workers using heavy equipment to communicate safety
ORISE has also developed summaries of Congressional Testimony on occupational cancer and indoor air for use by Capitol Hill staffers to understand occupational health issues .
