Wednesday, September 17, 2008
William Marsiglia, a senior at Sachem High School East, came to BNL this summer through an Arthritis Foundation Summer Student Fellowship for research on inflammation, with guidance from BNL mentor Peter Thanos, Medical Department. More...

Collaborating for a "Perfect" Scan of Nuclear Matter

Tuesday, September 16, 2008
As the finishing touches are put on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Switzerland, Brookhaven's Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) continues to exploit its unique ability to explore the surprising features of matter bound by the strongest of Nature's forces. Although RHIC's overall mission is quite different from other machines on the horizon, new scientific facilities are incorporating heavy ion capabilities similar to RHIC. More...

Two Brookhaven Lab Buildings Achieve LEED Green Building Certification

Monday, September 15, 2008
The 94,500 square-foot Center for Functional Nanomaterials and the 65,000 square-foot Research Support Building (above) have each been awarded a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver rating by the U.S. Green Building Council. More...

BNLers Celebrate LHC Start-Up

Friday, September 12, 2008
On September 10, Brookhaven physicists, engineers, and technicians celebrated the start-up of the Large Hadron Collider. Brookhaven's event featured talks by Lab Director Sam Aronson, NYS Assemblyman Marc Alessi, and Brookhaven physicists Peter Wanderer and Howard Gordon. More...

U.S. Army Holds 'Casing of the Colors' Ceremony at BNL

Friday, September 12, 2008
On Sept. 7, Brookhaven Lab hosted soldiers from the U.S. Army at a ceremony marking the retiring of the 77th U.S. Army Regional Readiness Command - the infantry division that began on the Lab site, formerly Camp Upton, a U.S. Army induction and training center during WWI and WWII. More...

First Beam for the Large Hadron Collider

Wednesday, September 10, 2008
Early this morning 4,000 miles away, scientists at CERN for the first time sent a beam of protons all the way around the 17-mile ring of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This is an important milestone for Brookhaven and numerous scientific institutions around the world that helped make the massive accelerator a reality. More...

Enzyme Detectives Uncover New Reactions, Products

Monday, September 08, 2008
If your experiment doesn't go the way you expect, take a closer look - something even more interesting may have happened. That strategy has led scientists at Brookhaven Lab to discover a fundamental shift in an enzyme's function that could help expand the toolbox for engineering biofuels and other plant-based oil products. More...

Brookhaven's Remote Monitoring Room for ATLAS

Thursday, September 04, 2008
Although Brookhaven is nearly 4,000 miles away from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, the Lab houses a special space where physicists on site in Upton can be part of the action in Geneva. From the Remote Monitoring Room, scientists will take shifts monitoring data generated in the ATLAS detector when the LHC starts colliding beams of protons. More...

Giant Furnace Opens to Reveal 'Perfect' LSST Mirror Blank

Tuesday, September 02, 2008
The single-piece primary and tertiary mirror blank cast for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is "perfect", say project astronomers and engineers. LSST will take pictures of the sky using a gigantic camera within a telescope. Brookhaven has the lead role in developing LSST's electronic sensors which are sensitive to near-ultraviolet, infrared and visible light. More...
