Training Design, Development, and Evaluation

Every organization has unique training situations. The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) assesses each client's needs and customizes a solution that include any or all of the following:

Research and development of content by subject matter and training development experts: based on the course topic, learning objectives, and audience, ORISE researches and prepares the material

Training materials, professionally designed and printed: manuals and other supplemental information laid out effectively for optimum usability

Delivery of training in-person: professional trainers from ORISE can deliver the courses either at ORISE or at the customer’s facility

Train-the-trainer sessions: training for a small group of employees who will then be prepared to roll out the information organization-wide

Web-based or computer-based products: could be used in place of in-person training, a supplement to the in-person training, or as a resource for new employees

Exercises and drills: allow participants to practice their responses in a fictional scenario either during a full-scale or tabletop exercise

Evaluation: following the delivery of any training product, ORISE evaluates the final result to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement

Project Examples

Courses in using the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) databases

Cardiovascular Public Health Training and Technical Support
For the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, ORISE conducts training, develops computer-based training products, and prepares resource materials that help state agency staff implement heart disease and stroke prevention programs.

Self-Directed Study—Nuclear Regulatory Commission
ORISE supports the NRC’s training and development program with the design, development, and delivery of directed self-study courses. The courses allow individuals to study at their own pace and to self-check their progress while remaining current on regulations.
