DaimlerChrysler’s auto sales in Chile jumped 50 percent since implementation of the U.S.-Chile Free Trade Agreement (FTA), thanks to tariff reductions and a decrease in Chile’s auto luxury tax. The FTA included an obligation requiring Chile to eliminate its 85 percent luxury tax on autos over a four-year period. The U.S. auto industry will likely continue to enjoy increased auto sales in Chile because as of January 1, 2007, Chile’s four-year transition period officially ended and its auto luxury tax has been completely phased out.
