Welcome to Region 5
Welcome to Region 5 Three day closure of U.S. Hwy. 730 begins Sept. 25
UMATILLA, Ore. - The Oregon Department of Transportation’s contractor, Weaver Construction, is repairing two bridges along U.S. Highway 730 west of Irrigon, located one mile east of the junction of Interstate 84 at mile point 168.8. Construction activities are prompting single lane travel at the UPRR Clarke and USRS Canal bridges with temporary signals controlling traffic movements. Beginning the morning of Sept. 25 the bridges will be closed for up to 72 hours, with traffic returning to single lane travel by 6 a.m. Sept. 28. During the closure through traffic will detoured around U.S. 730 via Interstate 84 and Interstate 82. Motorists are advised to plan extra travel time for this detour route.

This closure was originally planned to begin Friday, but has been delayed to begin Sept. 25.

The three day closure is needed to accommodate the replacement of the bridge decks and cure time for new concrete. One of the bridge decks will be replaced this month and the second is scheduled to be replaced around October 20 with a similar three-day closure.

"Once the closure begins, the contractor will have a short amount of time to remove the old bridge deck and pour concrete for the new one," said ODOT Region 5 Public Information Officer Tom Strandberg. "It will then take about a day for the new concrete to cure before traffic can be allowed back on the structure. We understand the closures will affect some travelers and ask that motorists plan ahead. We will open the route as soon as possible."

The bridge repair project is scheduled to be completed by November 15, 2008.

More information about this project is available by contacting ODOT Region 5 Public Information Officer Tom Strandberg at (541) 963-1330 or by email at thomas.m.strandberg@odot.state.or.us .

I-84 Rolling Slowdowns south-east of Baker City
Burnt River Canyon
Motorists may experience temporary slowdowns on Interstate 84 over the next couple months 30 miles southeast of Baker City. ODOT contractors will occasionally use pilot cars to slow traffic to 30 miles-per-hour near mile point 336 to accommodate excavation and blasting alongside the freeway. The slow downs create a window of time when no cars will be in the area so that blasting operations can be safely performed. The work is part of a project that includes realigning two sharp corners and improving safety along the 12-mile stretch of winding freeway known as Burnt River Canyon.

ODOT estimates a half-dozen rolling slow downs per week could take place over the next couple months, but that no more than two are expected in any one 24-hour period. Travelers are advised to watch for traffic control signs and pay extra attention when driving through this and all construction work zones.
Freeway on-ramp at Rye Valley interchange to close for construction
Contractors for the Oregon Department of Transportation will close the eastbound Interstate 84 on-ramp at the Rye Valley interchange (Exit 340) on Wednesday, June 18 for bridge replacement work. The ramp will remain closed until October.

Signs will direct motorists on Dixie Creek Road and Rye Valley Lane headed to eastbound I-84 to drive west on I-84 for two miles, take Exit 338 (Lookout Mountain Road), cross under I-84, then proceed eastbound on I-84.

From July to September, crews will occasionally reduce I-84 traffic near the interchange to one lane in each direction. The temporary lane closures will allow workers to repair the freeway bridge over the Burnt River, east of the Exit 340 overpass.

Overnight detours planned on I-84 west of La Grande
LA GRANDE - Contractors for the Oregon Department of Transportation expect to open the Highway 244 bridge over Interstate 84 Friday, Sept. 19 following six months of construction. The Hilgard Interchange is located in northeastern Oregon seven miles west of La Grande at I-84 exit 252. The new 147-foot-long bridge on Highway 244 entirely spans I-84 using high-performance steel girders.
The following week workers will close Interstate 84 for three nights at the Hilgard Interchange. The closures will occur Monday, Sept. 22 through Wednesday, Sept. 24 from 8 p.m. each night to 6 a.m. the following morning.
I-84 Snake River crossing returns to four-lane traffic
ONTARIO - A contractor for the Oregon Department of Transportation and the Idaho Transportation Department will shift westbound traffic on Interstate 84 from the eastbound I-84 bridge over the Snake River back to the westbound bridge on Friday, Sept. 19 following five months of bridge repair work. Two lanes of normal width will be available in both directions.

During construction, both directions of travel have been routed over the eastbound span, resulting in one-lane traffic and narrow lanes in both directions over the Snake River. Until Friday, trucks carrying loads wider than 12 feet will be detoured around the work zone using Highway 95 and Highway 30 through the Gayway Junction.

Holm II, a contractor for ODOT and ITD, is completing the second of two construction seasons to replace one bridge and repair three others on Interstate 84 in the Ontario area. The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of October.

ODOT is working with the Idaho Transportation Department to fund the bridge work. ITD is funding half the cost to repair the I-84 Snake River bridges. The balance of the bridge repair and replacement work is funded by the Oregon Transportation Investment Act. The Oregon Bridge Delivery Partners is helping ODOT to manage the design and construction of improvements to more than 300 state highway bridges funded by the OTIA program.
High water damages OR Hwy. 82 guardrail
Wallowa River
High water in the Wallowa River has washed out part of the embankment along Oregon Highway 82 east of the town of Wallowa. Oregon Department of Transportation crews worked last night to stabilize the river bank and are continuing today to repair the damaged shoulder near mile point 49.15. Flaggers will be controlling single lane traffic through the area. Motorists may experience minor delays and are advised to plan a little extra travel time along this route.

ODOT plans to open the highway to two-lane travel for the holiday weekend, but may need to return Tuesday to finish up the work next week.
