New Bering Sea Ecosystem Project
The St. Paul Coastal District and the Division of Governmental Coordination have received funding from NOAA's Office of Coastal Resource Management for a project focusing on the Bering Sea ecosystem. The project's overall purpose is to increase coordination and communication among those interested in Bering Sea ecosystem management. There are six major components of the project:
Ecosystem Management: to develop an annotated bibliography for major references about ecosystem management.
Local Knowledge: to develop an annotated bibliography from key references about the use of local or traditional knowledge.
Ocean Management: to analyze programs initiated by other states to determine whether such an approach could be used in the Bering Sea.
Local Observations: to complete a demonstration project to post information on the internet about local observations of anomalies or unusual circumstances.
Inquiry: to interview key agencies and groups concerned with overall management of Bering Sea resources and uses and identify key issues and concerns.
Workshops: sponsor a Bering Sea Workshop for coastal districts in Jan 98 and one for all interested parties in Spring 98 to encourage ongoing dialogue about ecosystem and ocean management.
