Black-capped Chickadee

The black-capped chickadee is one of the most common birds in the pine barrens of Long Island. You can here it calling its typical chickadee-dee-dee. It also calls out Oh! Canadaaaa. This little bird is a cavity nester and can be seen in the spring around tops of trees eating insects and the fresh buds forming on tips of branches.

 


White-crowned sparrow

The white-crowned sparrow is a winter resident on Long Island.  Eastern populations nest in Maine and Canada.
