Turbulence is random fluid motion. Turbulent mixing plays an important role in transporting nutrients to the surface layer which in turn contributes to the growth of plankton. Turbulence transmits heat at the ocean surface contributing to the balance of radiative energy that governs climate (D. R. Caldwell and J.&N. Moum, 1995)
